Kendrick Lamar wins Pulitzer Prize for 'DAMN.'-and the internet is thrilled

More: Kendrick Lamar wins Pulitzer Prize for music for 'Damn.'

The winners of the Pulitzer Prizes were announced at New York City's Columbia University on Monday, honoring the best of the year's US-based journalism, literature and music composition.

It was not until 1997 that the Pulitzer Prize for music went even to a jazz work: Wynton Marsalis's oratorio Blood on the Fields.

Lamar is the first rapper to win a Pulitzer, and Damn. is the first non-classical or jazz work to win the award.

"DAMN.", which reached number one on the USA albums chart, moves forward the conversation about race that Lamar started on his previous album, "To Pimp a Butterfly", which infused jazz and spoken word and gave voice to the Black Lives Matter movement. Lamar, 30, has won 11 Grammy Awards and has been lauded by and has met with President Barack Obama on several occasions.

"DAMN.", released on April 14, 2017, won five Grammys, including best rap album, and the album topped several year-end lists by critics, including NPR, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, BBC News, Complex and Vulture.

Even if DAMN. remains the only non-classical Pulitzer Prize victor for years to come, music buffs will likely not forget the honor. In response to Lamar being the first hip-hop artist to win, Canedy said: "I can not take credit".

Public service award winners receive a gold medal, and the other awards carry a prize of $15,000 each.

The second song, "DNA", sees another Fox News audio sampling: "Hip-hop has done more damage to young African Americans than racism in recent years".

The New York Times and The Washington Post shared the national reporting prize for furthering understanding of Russian interference in the 2016 election, and the connections between Russian actors and the Trump campaign, his transition team and administration, Canedy said.

The Republican president calls the investigation a "witch hunt".

Breaking news reporting: Staff of the Press-Democrat, Santa Rosa, Calif. "Their work is real news of the highest order".

For the arts, prizes are awarded in seven categories, including fiction, drama, and music. "For a generous book, musical in its prose and expansive in its structure and range, about growing older and the essential nature of love".

The Pulitzers, the most prestigious honours in American journalism, have been awarded since 1917.
