Sunday's shock defeat at home to West Bromwich Albion handed the Premier League title to Manchester City, and the abject performances from some of his bigger players did not go unnoticed by the Man United boss.
"Rotating is not the right word", Mourinho said of his approach at the Vitality Stadium. "The only way to go is with the performance".
The Red Devils won the game after a brace from Paul Pogba, as well as a timely finish from Chris Smalling, and after the match, reports surfaced that the United players had celebrated boisterously in the changing rooms.
"He told them be careful it is going to be different against West Brom and I go back to Pogba: why didn't you and the rest of the team do what you did against City all season?" added the former France worldwide.
Mourinho meanwhile, Express Sport understands, could axe Pogba for the FA Cup semi-final showdown with Tottenham on Saturday (5.15pm).
Mourinho refused to single out Paul Pogba, indicating the midfielder was replaced after 58 minutes against West Brom because of a booking. It's an opportunity for people to play and to try to get a place in the team for Spurs. Mourinho said: 'He worked hard but the game was not for him'.
When asked about Pogba's level of performance, Mourinho said: "It was not just him and he had a yellow card so he was in a more hard position than others. He had a yellow card so he was in a more hard position than others", explained the boss.
The United manager remains confident in his own ability but said his side must replicate City's consistency next season. You can do it if your team is not losing the ball, but our team was losing the ball so easily with the complication [of our football]. It's the only way I can select players.
"Playing with only two midfield players you can not play with one player who is in risk of not being able to make a foul".
Questioned specifically over his disappointment in Pogba's display, Mourinho went on: "It was not just him, and he had a yellow card so he was in a more hard position than others".
