An emotional Boney Kapoor reacts to Sridevi winning the National Award

The last time she got such a character was in Lamhe where her Pooja had to come to terms with the reality that the elderly man she loves and thinks that he reciprocates her feelings is indeed still in love with her dead mother whom she resembles.

Directed by Assamese filmmaker Rima Das, "Village Rockstars" won the award for the best feature film of 2017, along with a few more awards in the editing (Das), audiography (Mallika Das) and child artist category (Bhanita Das). Ganesh Acharya has won the award for Best Choreography for the song Goli Tu Lath maar in Toilet Ek Prem Katha. Last year, Akshay Kumar bagged the Best Actor award for Rustom.

It was Shekhar Kapur who gave Sridevi Mr India (1987), one film where the actress excelled and showed she can be a comedian, a seductress and an entertainer all at once. Sinjar, made in Jasari language, won the Indira Gandhi award for the best debut film of a director. Sen also featured in the 2016 Oscar-nominated film Lion, besides doing small roles in Kahaani and Parched.

"Thondimuthalam Driksakshiyum" also won the Best Malayalam Film, Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor awards.

Mom, which was produced by Boney Kapoor, saw Sridevi play a biology teacher who sets out to avenge her stepdaughter after she is raped. I had no idea I was even in the running... The film was sent as India's official entry for the Oscars but did not make it to the shortlist.

Earlier, Sridevi's husband Boney Kapoor and daughters Jhanvi and Khushi had also issued a joint statement thanking the Indian government and the jury members for the honour. Malayalam actress Surabhi Lakshmi won the Best Actress award for her role in Minnaminungu.

Arun Kuppuswamy's "Monday", won the "Special Jury Award" for a very simple and surreal representation of the mechanical and mundane. We don't know if we should laugh with joy or cry in her memory.

Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman swept the best music direction category by winning the best songs for the Tamil film Kaatru Veliyidai and the best background music for the Hindi film Mom. Malayalam actress Asha Sarath was the top choice for best actress. Actress Divya Dutta also won the best supporting actress award for Irada.
