Technically the feature was already there in the Fire HD 10 but now Amazon is rolling it out to its smaller brethren. Don't feel like buying an Amazon Echo? Starting this week, owners of either the Fire 7 and the Fire HD 8 (2017) will be able to launch Alexa using their voice, whenever the tablet's screen is in use or the device is connected to power.
Recently we reported that Alexa can record your favorite shows for you and now it looks like Amazon can help you with your family announcements. Currently, the intercom feature is only for Echo speakers and not any third-party Alexa-enabled device like the Ecobee4 Smart Thermostat and many others. Amazon's documentation page mentions how the Button can act as a "sound effect generator" or a colored light-up indicator-turning red when your timer hits zero, for example.
As a father of two, I can see using Alexa Announcements for things like "OK, guys, time to brush your teeth" or "Please do your chores".
Now, Amazon is giving more control to parents with remote access. Rather than being repeated in Alexa's own voice, it'll be the user's own voice that is heart.
The pitch is simple - just start a command with "Alexa, announce that", "Alexa, tell everyone" or "Alexa, broadcast", then tack on your message.
If you want to call a meeting, you could say "Alexa, announce a meeting in the conference room in 10 minutes".
