Texas Primary recap: Senate race set; House races head to runoffs

Democratic primary voters said they were energized by frustrations with President Donald Trump.

David Wasserman, a congressional elections expert in Washington, said that even in a primary election, the enthusiasm level showed by Democrats is consequential.

Lamb has mostly shied away from national Democrats, saying the party needs new leadership and distancing himself from House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

A little more than 1.8 million votes were cast in the 2014 Texas primaries, down 10 percent from the 2010 primaries. "That's a good thing for November".

O'Rourke spoke about Texas voters in a video on his Facebook page as election results began coming in. Now he's a central figure in midterm primaries.

Democratic primary candidate for the 7th congressional district Laura Moser cheers with supporters at a watch party in Houston in Houston on March 6, 2018.

"She represents a new, young, energetic face (and) certainly brings a new background, as far as her life experiences", Hoar said. Loudly strong (Trump). Quietly strong (Wall).

As Democrats seek to retake control of the House of Representatives by turning 24 seats blue, Texas is unlikely to turn to give them a win, some warned. On February 22nd it distributed an article she had written in 2014 for the Washingtonian, a magazine, in which she said she would "sooner have my teeth pulled out without anaesthesia" than live in Paris, Texas.

Other GOP groups are also spending heavily. Moser is running to the left of other leading candidates, and Our Revolution, Sen.

Unfortunately for the DCCC, Moser won enough votes to make it into the runoff, which means a high-profile and divisive battle royal between the Clinton Establishment and Bernie Sanders-Liz Warren wings of the party.

The Houston seat is likely headed to a runoff. Neither he nor Cruz has faced serious primary challengers, but O'Rourke has outraised Cruz and the incumbent has warned conservatives against complacency, suggesting that liberals will "crawl over broken glass in November to vote", against Trump and the GOP.

"Democratic energy in Houston is undeniably surging, while Congressman Culberson is stuck on defense as he struggles to sell an unpopular tax bill, explain skyrocketing healthcare costs, and connect with voters who are sick of Republican-controlled Washington".

But just as important, if not more so, there were marked differences between the parties in terms of the tone of their primaries. The senator also is using his stature with endorsements in several of the 21 contested Republican House primaries.

It was supposed to be different in Texas Tuesday night.

The state Senate is shaping up as a key battleground.

The outgoing lawmakers include powerful committee chairs including Jeb Hensarling, 60, who heads the House Financial Services Committee and Lamar Smith, 69, who chairs the House Science, Space and Technology Committee.

The Texas Tribune is a nonprofit, nonpartisan media organization that informs Texans - and engages with them - about public policy, politics, government and statewide issues. In a district in San Diego four Democrats are running to replace Darrell Issa, a Republican who is retiring (a fourth dropped out last week citing concerns that a crowded field would play into the hands of Republicans).

Gov. Greg Abbott tried to unseat three Republican incumbents. Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is under felony indictment on charges of securities fraud, is unopposed in the primary. Later that year, Republican George W. Bush and Republican Kay Bailey Hutchison would respectively win the gubernatorial and US Senate elections in the state easily. On the Democratic side, Lupe Valdez (42.89 percent) will be in a runoff with Andrew White (27.38 percent) to see who gets to vie for governor come November.
