They did not reveal either salary - Foy's was put at $40,000 an episode by Variety past year - but told a panel event in Jerusalem that Smith's 2010-2013 starring role on the BBC's Doctor Who had been the decisive factor.
Producers Suzanne Mackie, Andy Harries and Martin Childs acknowledged the pay disparity at the INTV Conference in Jerusalem, noting that Foy made less than Smith, who plays Prince Philip, despite the fact that she's the star of the Netflix drama, Variety reports.
Despite the accolades and acclaim for Foy, he kept his higher salary in season two.
"Going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen", Mackie told the audience.
Smith also earned numerous award nominations for his portrayal, but did not win a major gong. And the show, one of the most expensive in television history, had a budget of $7 million per episode, while Foy was paid a reported $40,000 per episode.
The reason Matt Smith got more money is that he was more famous going in, from playing the Doctor on "Doctor Who".
The pay difference was due to Smith coming into the show after a six-year stint as Doctor Who on television, the producers said. Helena Bonham Carter takes over for Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret as new characters - including Princess Diana - will be introduced.
