Montreal unemployment rate up slightly from January, down from a year ago

The numbers are in and Windsor's unemployment rate has notched up a few points.

In the United States, there was an increase of 313,000 jobs in February but the unemployment rates was unchanged at 4.1 per cent.

Most of the gains were driven by public-sector employment, which increased by 50,000 jobs.

For the province, the unemployment rate was 5.6 per cent in February.

Compared with 12 months earlier, the overall job market added 282,500 positions for an increase of 1.5 per cent - and all of that year-over-year growth came from full-time work.

The jobless rate in Victoria was 3.4 per cent in December. That's up from 5.4 per cent in January but down from 6.4 per cent in February 2017. Average hourly wages for permanent employees rose by 3.1 percent from last February, down from the 3.3 percent year-over-year increase in January. Ohio's February jobless rate will be released March 23. The next rate announcement from the bank is scheduled for April 18.

The mixed nature of the data is likely to reinforce the Bank ofCanada's cautious stance on interest rates after it stayed on the sidelines on Wednesday. The labour force decreased by 7,100 people.

While the job market expanded somewhat, it comes after a huge loss of 88,000 positions the previous month.

In January, Ohio employment in goods-producing industries, at 921,500, increased 1,300 over the month; gains in construction (+2,600) and mining/logging (+100) outweighed losses in manufacturing (-1,400). "Meanwhile, the US job growth rate also slowed from 1.56% in December to 1.45 percent in January".
