Jimmy Kimmel may avoid political statements at Oscars

The night ended on an emotional high as Frances McDormand, the night's best actress victor for "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri", capped her acceptance speech by asking all the women in the hall who had been Oscar-nominated to stand, drawing rousing applause.

This is Zvyagintsev's second defeat at the Academy Awards - his movie "Leviathan" was nominated in 2014 but lost to the movie "Ida" by Polish director Pawel Pawlikowski. Nine out of the possible 10 films were nominated this year, each of them vastly different from the other.

Kimmel must navigate the #MeToo sexual misconduct scandal that has rocked Hollywood in front of a live audience of A-list celebrities, many of whom say they are victims, as well as millions watching at home. By one study's findings, Weinstein was thanked more often than God in acceptance speeches.

The Oscars will air live from the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 4 at 8 p.m. EST/5 p.m. PST on ABC.

Whether "Call Me by Your Name" star Armie Hammer will make it to the Academy Awards appears to be up in the air, as he shared an image of himself attached to an IV drip after missing Saturday's Independent Spirit Awards, where his co-star Timothee Chalamet won the best male lead award, due to illness. Even if the film doesn't win Best Picture, Oldman should be recognized for the stellar work he put in to making this movie a consideration for the award.

The red carpet has been rolled out and the champagne is on ice for an Oscars ceremony filled with suspense over the movie industry's biggest prize - and whether Hollywood's campaign against sexual harassment will steal the spotlight. The last four Spirit best film winners have gone on to win best picture at the Oscars.

As always, if you don't have a paid TV subscription you can test out free trials of services like Sling TV or Playstation Vue (you don't need to own a Playstation console to use Vue), which allow you to stream TV online. We'll let you know if anything important happens.

Frances McDormand won Best Actress award for the role of Mildred Hayes, a mother, who seeks justice for her murdered daughter, in the movie "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri".

The 90th Academy Awards are officially underway, and host Jimmy Kimmel wasted no time tackling some of the controversial issues facing Hollywood this year.

The parade of sexual harassment allegations has made the normal superficial red carpet a place of sometimes more serious discussion than attire. Seacrest has denied it and E! has supported him. Allison Janney won Best Supporting Actress for "I, Tonya". But ratings have recently been declining.

The Oscars start Sunday at 8pm EST.

Many viewers have said they will not be tuning in. Neither of the PwC representatives involved in the mishap a year ago, Brian Cullinan or Martha Ruiz, will return to the show. But first in his opening monologue, Kimmel addressed last year's fiasco when the name of the wrong film was announced as Best Picture victor. The "Bonnie and Clyde" duo will, 12 months later, get "take two".
