Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu announced at the event that the company has skipped the P11 model after P10 and jumped straight to P20. It costs thousands of Euros and is only available on a limited run, but it looks snazzy, so we took it for a spin at Huawei's P20 launch in Paris this week.
Okay, Huawei took the lid off the much-anticipated Huawei P20/ P20 Pro and along with them came the Huawei FreedBuds among other accessories.
The phones also features a colour temperature sensor for better colour reproduction. It also includes on-device Prisma processing, which supports real-time filter recommendations based on scene and object recognition. The camera also performed well when used in extreme low-light. P20 Pro sports Leica-branded tri-lens camera setup at the back with one RGB, monochrome, and a Telephoto lens.
For selfies, this phone is equipped with 24MP front camera with f/2.0 aperture, AI beautification and 3D portrait lighting.
Huawei has previously stated its long-term ambition to become the number one smartphone brand in the world by the early 2020s. The P20 achieved a score of 102 cementing its spot on the podium. But, the hostile U.S. attitude to the Huawei brand - based on some serious cybersecurity allegations - might mean that American consumers will have to go without.
That said, we're still waiting for some apps to get optimised for the phone's notch, as things still get hidden "behind" the gap. It is powered by the Octa-core HiSilicon Kirin 970 processor which is Huawei's own but a very powerful processor. They also support Google ARCore and a deeply customized Google Assistant. The Huawei P20 has 4GB RAM, while the P20 Pro has 6GB of RAM. There is no option for external storage in this phones. The in-screen fingerprint sensor allows users to wake up the device by floating their finger above the display, while touching the sensor unlocks the phone.
The 5.8-inch screen Huawei P20 and 6.1-inch screen Huawei P20 Pro feature ultra-thin bezels and impressive screen-to-body ratios for better viewing experiences with more on-screen information, whether reading or gaming. It is IP67 rated for dust and water resistance.
Like previous Huawei devices the Pro includes plenty of clever image software with Huawei using AI to predict what you are shooting.
The device has a 4 000mAh battery with super charge capabilities and is the first Huawei flagship to enable quick wireless charging.
