The disgraced movie mogul is featured wearing a robe, pajama trousers and slippers as he is seated on a gold couch on a black and red podium that read "Casting Couch". It was created by Los Angeles street artist Plastic Jesus and features Weinstein sitting on the couch in a satin dressing gown, pyjama pants, and slippers, clutching an Oscar.
The statue is a collaboration between street artists Plastic Jesus and Joshua "Ginger" Monroe, known for their avant garde installations.
He and Ginger were also responsible for producing naked statues of Donald Trump that appeared in various U.S. cities in 2016, before he was elected president. The statue was put in place just ahead of Sunday's Academy Awards. "Casting Couch" follows conservative street artist Sabo's contributions earlier in the week: three billboards saying, "And the Oscar for biggest pedophile goes to..."; "We all knew and still no arrests" and "Name names on stage or shut the hell up!"
"There's so much about Hollywood that's great and celebrated in the Oscars, but there's also this underbelly of darkness within the industry that we often sweep under the carpet or ignore", said Plastic Jesus, formerly a London-based photographer. The project, made of fiberglass and acrylic resin, was in the works for two months. Visitors to the sculpture were sitting next to the faux Weinstein and taking selfies, turning it into an interactive installment.
Weinstein was accused of engaging in sexual misconduct with more than 80 women, including Gwyneth Paltrow and Ashley Judd. The producer, who denies all allegations of non-consensual sex, is now still in a rehab facility in Arizona, though he recently spoke out, apologizing to Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lawrence for using their names to dismiss a sexual misconduct class action suit.
