Gandhi statue damaged in Kannur, police detain mentally unstable man

Damage was caused to the Gandhi statue in front of Thaliparambu Taluk Office on Thursday.

A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah condemned incidents of vandalising statues, reports came of a statue of Mahatma Gandhi being defaced at Kannur in Kerala and paint being poured on Dr BR Ambedkar's bust in Chennai.

Gandhi's bust near the Thaliparamba taluk office was found defaced in the morning with its spectacle carving damaged and a garland on it seen lying nearby. The police had launched an investigation into the case soon after it was reported.

Concerned over such incidents, Union home minister Rajnath Singh asked Governor Tathagata Roy and state DGP AK Shukla to make sure peace and harmony until the new BJP-IPFT government takes charge. Reports state that the supporters chanted "Bharat Mata Ki Jai" while the statue was pulled down. MHA has taken serious notes of such incidents of vandalism.

There have been multiple incidents of statues being vandalised in various parts of the country. Several political parties have expressed concerns regarding the incident.

"Persons indulging in such acts must be sternly dealt with & booked under relevant provisions of law, "Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said". Another statue of Lenin was vandalised despite directives from the Centre.
