Another promising prospect is "the BMW 8 Series will take over as the new flagship model of the BMW line-up and, as such, combines unsurpassed sportiness and elegance", says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design.
Planned to join 2-door coupe and convertible models in a future three-strong 8-Series lineup, the upcoming production version of the Concept M8 Gran Coupe aims to elevate BMW into the same exclusive market segment occupied by the likes of Aston Martin with the DB11, Bentley with the Continental GT and Mercedes-AMG with its new GT 4-door Coupe.
BMW today showcased its latest 8 Series concept, which the Bavarian automaker describes as "polarising". Expected to hit dealerships next year, the 8 Series replaces the 6 Series, which was axed last year due to sluggish sales.
By unveiling the ultra-aggressive Concept M8 Gran Coupe at this year's Geneva Motor Show, BMW is looking to put the world on notice, while giving the letter "M" a whole new meaning. From the side, the M8 Gran Coupe looks long and sexy with its long wheelbase, long hood, flowing roofline and short tail. It symbolises a new and unique understanding of luxury. "With this vehicle, BMW M unmistakably brings luxury out of the "comfort zone".
The long wheelbase of the concept is nearly dwarfed by the large features of the front fascia, meant to communicate a sense of performance, with the sleek line of the greenhouse skipping the flat plane roof of the 7-Series.
Lastly, BMW confirms that the 8 Series and therefore the four-door Gran Coupe will force the 7 Series out of the brand's range-topping status. "The contours of the radiator grille kidneys broaden as they descend toward the road, emphasising the car's low center of gravity". It's previewing the idea of a new M8 version of the revived 8 Series and gauging interest in an 8 Series Grand Coupe variant. The air intakes are cast in carbonfibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP).
