Amazon 'aware' of issue causing Echo devices to spontaneously laugh

Some people recently started reporting that Amazon's voice-activated digital assistant, often packaged in microphone- and speaker-bearing Echo devices, has laughed, unprompted.

More Amazon Echo users have posted their personal experiences regarding the random laughter on social media.

When the service is enabled you can hear today's headlines from the Liverpool Echo by saying 'Alexa, what's in the news?' or 'Alexa, what's my flash briefing?'

The Seattle-based company didn't say when the fix would be deployed. That outage occurred well after the first recorded incident acknowledging Alexa's apparent laughing problem. Alexa can be useful in a virtually endless number of ways, but according to some unfortunate users, it's now scaring the living daylights out of them.

"I was trying to turn off some lights and they kept turned back on", said one user.

But so far, it's unclear why Alexa is laughing even when users don't ask her to. The laugh doesn't sound like the machine-voice Alexa has, it sounds like an actual human female. My wife was there when it happened and she is the only person who can drop-in.

And this is why I'll never become so lazy that I can't get up to flip a switch myself.

Then, just as our paranoia is subsiding, our Amazon Echo that has been sitting quietly in its corner issues forth with an evil laugh. If this had happened to me when I was home alone, I would have pissed my trousers.

One user suggested the issue likely stemmed from a misheard command or conversation that Alexa interpreted as a command.
