Winter Olympics Shortcast & Primetime Lineup for Friday

"She is likely to propose an invitation to go to Pyongyang to meet with Kim Jong Un", said Bong Youngshik, a researcher at Yonsei University's Institute for North Korean Studies in Seoul. The vice president wanted to show the "alliance was strong" by sitting with Moon and Abe.

Pence was in close proximity to the North Korean party both at the VIP reception and later, watching the Opening Ceremony from Moon's box, which included Kim Yong Nam and leader Kim Jong Un's sister, Kim Yo Jong.

The U.S. team got off to a controversial start on Friday with its flag bearer choice. But privately, officials said, Pence expressed concern to Moon about his more conciliatory tone toward North Korea.

On Friday morning, just hours before the Winter Games opening ceremony, the Ad Hoc Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected Russian athletes' appeals challenging their non-invitation to PyeongChang.

Hundreds of Twitter users in recent days have referred to "Pyongyang2018", and while some were making a dig at the presence of North Korea at the Games, in many cases it appears to have been a simple mix-up. The organizers of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics said its servers were hacked by an unidentified attacker during the opening ceremony the previous day.

Thirty years later, there have been sporadic protests against the presence of North Koreans in Pyeongchang, although opinion is split.

The allies agreed to delay joint military drills until after the Paralympics in March, but Pyongyang has called for the exercises to be halted altogether. He also said the ceremonies were not the appropriate venue for serious talks.

They added: "Kim Yong Nam, Kim Yo Jong and President Moon Jae In and his wife all stood up to wave to the players of the north and the south". He has referred to the games as the "Olympic Games of peace".
