Some Christian Denominations Mark Ash Wednesday Today

He said lovers can exchange gifts on Wednesday but any major Valentine's Day celebrations should be pushed to Thursday.

The Head of the Catholic Church in Fiji, Archbishop Peter Loy Chong says Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. Therefore, no dispensation, or special exception, will be granted for that day in the Archdiocese of Hartford. "Priests would apply the ashes to a person's forehead while saying: "Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return".

Nevertheless, here are three suggestions for Ash Wednesday-themed "Valentines", for lovers who intend on celebrating Lent. This makes the fact that today, February 14, is also Valentines Day arguably problematic for some people.

The other day Catholics are asked to fast is on Good Friday, while they're asked to abstain from eating meat every Friday during Lent.

To quite differ from the above, chairperson of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops, Philip Anyolo told Christians in Kenya this week: "These two days that have different philosophies coincide".

For the second consecutive year, archdiocesan leaders are encouraging Catholics to go without their cellphones on Fridays this Lent. It is one of the most powerful days in the Church's calendar since it echoes the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness at the beginning of his ministry. After a series of parish mergers and church building closures since last summer, pastors of parishes with multiple church buildings will determine the church where confessions will be heard. The symbol of ashes, usually marked in the shape of a cross, reminds us of the depth of our sin and the love of God shown through Christ's atonement. "With confession, our goal here is to be welcoming". The excitement is less focused on the conversations I have with others and more so on the conversation I have with myself - 'What am I going to give up this year?

Other faiths observe Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and Lent, but fasting and abstinence from meat generally are voluntary in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS), Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and Episcopal Church, all of which also will mark the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. "Valentine's Day can appropriately be celebrated on another day, such as Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which happens to be Mardi Gras, a time of celebration prior to the Lenten journey". We hear this plea echoing in our hearts, while in a few moments we will approach the Lord's altar to receive ashes on our forehead in accordance with a very ancient tradition. Lent precedes Easter Sunday, which falls on April 1 this year.
