Super blood moon to appear this week

For that second full moon in a month to fall into eclipse is even more rare; the last time that took place was on March 31, 1866.

The next lunar eclipse that can be viewed by Canadians coast to coast is January 21, 2019. That's when the moon slides into the earth's shadow.

The total lunar eclipse, which occurs about every year or two, is the most palpable of the three events and at the center of Wednesday's pageantry.

The sun, earth and moon will align with each other to bring about a blood moon. Residents will have only three minutes to see the total super moon eclipse, however, the entire process of the moon exiting the eclipse will be for an hour. The visible part of the eclipse will begin at 5.18 pm and last till 8.41 pm.

The "super blue blood moon" will be most visible to people on western part of North America, Alaska, and the Hawaiian islands, according to Gordon Johnston, program executive and lunar blogger at NASA.

Californians and west Canadians will be able to see the full total eclipse although the penumbral show will pass after the moon has set.

"Set your alarm early and go out and take a look", Johnston said. Supermoons are those that occur when the moon is at its closest approach (perigee) on its orbit around the earth. It'll be a blue moon, at least in name, because it will be the second full moon within a calendar month.

Mr Johnston said: "For the (continental) U.S., the viewing will be best in the West".

Americans in the east are advised to head outside to a high place at 6.45am ET, while those in the mid-west will have the best viewing at 6.15am-6.30am CST time.

What is a full moon?

In the Rocky Mountain region, the show begins as the umbra touches the edge of the Moon at 4:48 a.m. MST. Slooh spokespeople will narrate the progress of our satellite beginning 7 a.m. EST (1200 GMT), offering lunar science and mythology.

But, he said, "that's just the way the sky did it".

Love to observe the Moon?

During NASA's Apollo missions, scientists found that the moon's rocky covering, called regolith, was "fluffy" and not very supportive in the lower latitudes, Elphic said.

In Paducah, the maximum eclipse will happen at 6:54 a.m., and the moon will be right on or just below the horizon. The eclipse will be visible before sunrise on January 31 for those in North America, Alaska and Hawaii.

For those in the Middle East, Asia, eastern Russia, Australia and New Zealand, the event will be visible during moonrise on the morning of January 31st.
