Raiders officially announce hiring of Jon Gruden as coach

ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting the organization will sign Gruden to a 10-year contract, the longest in National Football League history, that will be worth approximately $100 million dollars when it is made official.

"I want to thank Ted for his tireless efforts as the general manager of the Green Bay Packers for these past 13 seasons", Packers president Mark Murphy said.

It had been a poorly kept secret in recent days Gruden was going to coach the Raiders, but McDonough really let the cat out of the bag.

A person with knowledge of the team's plans said the Raiders are planning a news conference Tuesday to announce that Gruden is leaving the broadcast booth to come back to coaching. It's an incredibly lucrative deal for Gruden, who has been a broadcaster the past nine years, turning down coaching offers along the way. "It'll be tough for a lot of us on the crew to be impartial when we go into those production meetings and see you next year".

Jon Gruden is heading back to Oakland.

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Gruden's contract, and the contracts his assistants will sign, will be heavily backloaded.

The move comes 20 years after he was hired by late owner Al Davis as the NFL's youngest head coach at age 34. He is the second-youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl in National Football League history, winning a ring at age 39 in his first season with Tampa Bay.

The Raiders fired Jack Del Rio after the team went 6-10 following a season in which they made the playoffs with a record of 12-4. He was 2-2 in the postseason, losing in the AFC title game following the 2000 season and the divisional round in 2001. Overall, Gruden is 95-81 in 11 seasons.
