A ceremony for the jersey retirement will take place during halftime in a game against the Golden State Warriors.
While Bryant started his career in 1996 by wearing number 8, he switched to number 24 after the 2005-06 season, one year after the Lakers traded away Shaquille O'Neal after a long-simmering feud between the two superstars. He praised Jackson as a basketball savant in 2016, and in October said he wants to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame by either Jackson or Michael Jordan in 2021.
The one-time NBA MVP and five-time champion paid tribute to those that inspired him in a speech, and gave special tribute to his family. "I'm very proud I get to come here with my family".
"It's the organization that I grew up loving", Bryant said of the Lakers during an interview with the L.A. Times.
"I'm not going to keep them in the locker room to watch tape of the first half", Warriors coach Steve Kerr said of his team being in attendance for Kobe Bryant's jersey retirement ceremony at halftime of Monday night's game.
Number 8 and number 24 finally have time to pursue all of the hobbies they love to do. I think 24 was more challenging, and I tend to gravitate to things that are harder to do, and physically for me, it was really hard to get up night in and night out. He's a very different player with a different mentality and mindset.
If that's how he competed against his teammates in practice, just imagine what he told opposing players during games.
Kobe became the 10th Laker to have his jersey retired by the iconic franchise.
