Man arrested in case of missing NC girl had criminal history

Woods said when she woke up, Mariah was missing.

"We have got to bring her home", Onslow County Sheriff Hans Miller said at a Saturday news conference. Woods told authorities that she put her daughter to bed Sunday evening and woke up to find her gone from their house in Jacksonville. Kimrey, who is Mariah's mom's live-in boyfriend, has not yet been charged with killing the 3-year-old.

The Fayetteville police dive team recovered the remains of Mariah around 5:30 p.m. Saturday in Shelter Creek along Shaw Highway in Pender County.

He did say that, while several items were flagged during a massive ground search involving more than 700 volunteers, those items did not appear to be related to the case. State records show that Kimrey had previously been charged with a series of small crimes dating back to 2005, the station said.

He allegedly "failed to notify a law enforcement authority of the death of Mariah Woods, and secretly disposed of the dead child's body", according to the arrest warrant.

"Allow us to review it to determine if it is of investigative value", FBI agent Stanley Meador said. It had been nearly a week since Mariah was last seen in bed by her mother around 11 p.m. on November 26.

An arrest warrant released Saturday morning accused Kimrey of "removing Mariah Woods' body from the scene of the her death, and did hide Mariah Woods death and body, knowing that Mariah Woods died from unnatural causes". He was taken into custody by investigators at the Onslow County Sheriff's Office on Friday.

Additional resources were allocated to help conduct interviews and searches for the little girl, including boats from the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries as well as police canines and horses from neighboring agencies, Miller said. Investigators also sorted through 95,000 pounds of trash by hand, searching for items of interest, the sheriff's office said.

The girl's father, Alex Woods, has said he has doubts about Woods' version of events. Woods told WCTI-TV in New Bern last week.
