CONFIRMED: The 'Face Unlock' feature is coming to the OnePlus 5

Popular Chinese smartphone manufacturer OnePlus has announced that it will extend the face recognition feature to their popular OnePlus 5 model.

The device is fueled by 3,300mAh battery that lasts up to 20 per cent longer than its predecessor OnePlus 3T. OnePlus 5 owners, time to be happy, because OnePlus just gave you a very timely Christmas present. Well, that's because it hasn't been included in this update. The camera comes with a new UI design along with beauty effect for Portrait Mode and Places tab for viewing photos on a map. OnePlus 5T also had the surprising security feature of Face Unlock. The company had promised the stable update by early 2018, but the current rollout indicates a change in schedule by OnePlus as a Christmas eve surprise to users.

OnePlus 5 owners have already had an exciting end to the year, since OnePlus started rolling out Android Oreo to the slightly older phone, so Face Unlock is another cherry on top. Meanwhile, the Clock app received an alarm calendar feature.

And though OnePlus' Face Unlock is convenient, it's likely not as secure as what you'd find on Apple's iPhone X. The former basically analyzes the images taken from a standard front-facing camera, a speedy approach, albeit one that's entirely based on software. We have basically told you all of the most important features coming in this update, but there are even more you will have to check out once you install the update.

Besides what was revealed in the forum, in a separate announcement, Carl Pei, OnePlus co-founder, revealed in a tweet that the OnePlus 5 would also get the OnePlus 5T's Face Unlock feature. This means that the feature is not almost as secure as other facial recognition implementations, though our testing showed that Face Unlock works incredibly fast and didn't get fooled by a picture. "We are dedicated to constantly optimizing Face Unlock, much like we do with OxygenOS as a whole, and this is but one example".
