However, Akhilesh Yadav did not agree that the BJP had improved its showing in the civic polls, that came eight months after Adityanath was sworn in as chief minister.
"If BJP claims that they enjoy the mandate of the people, and the entire country is with them, then they should set aside the EVMs and hold the elections through ballot paper". "General Elections are due in 2019".
Using the UP results at a rally in Gujarat, BJP national president Amit Shah said, "Whatever has happened in Uttar Pradesh is nothing compared to what is going to happen in Gujarat on December 18. I can guarantee if ballot papers are used, BJP won't come to power", she said. Similarly in Nagar Panchayat chairman's post, BJP won 100 seats and lost 337 seats while in Nagar Panchayat members, it lost 4728 seats and won just 662 seats.
Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday took to Twitter to show that the BJP has won only in areas where EVMs were used. Whereas in Nagar Palika BJP secured 916 posts against 4295 by others and in Nagar Panchayat polls it won won- 663 seats in comparison to 4715 won by other parties and independents.
SP leader Rajendra Chaudhary said that the BJP's claim of sweeping the urban local bodies polls was "far from true".
Of the total corporators - 1300, for which elections were held in the three-phased urban body polls in November, BJP managed to win 596 while the SP, which is not an urban voter based party has managed to get 202 seats and the BSP got 147 seats in its first outing in the civic polls. "The results haven't been out yet and they have already started making excuses for their defeat". This is clear from results of seats where ballot papers were used. The SP won 83 seats, while the BSP emerged victorious on 45 seats. This is barely 28 per cent, which is less than the passing percentage of 33. They (BJP) have spoken about only half of the actual results.... Their allegations are baseless.
UP BJP chief Mahendra Nath Pandey said opposition parties were indulging in propaganda only to hide their disappointment following the electoral losses. He claimed that people will again give a befitting reply to Opposition parties in 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Overall, in Gorakhpur, BJP won 27 wards, SP 18, BSP 2 and Congress 2.
