Apple has announced its editorial picks for the best apps, movies, TV shows, books, and podcasts available from its various online content stores. Apple has noticed four big trends in apps for the year, including the rise of augmented reality (AR) apps like Ikea Place, the increased popularity of real-time competitive gaming in games like Clash Royale and Hearthstone, apps like Hooked and Choice changing how we read, and a rise in awareness of mental health, which led to guided meditation app Calm being awarded 2017's iPhone app of the year award.
Moving on to the best games of the year, Splitter Critters took home the title on the iPhone, while The Witness came out on top on the iPad. Apple is celebrating the most popular apps, music and movies across the App Store, Apple Music and iTunes. The Witness was also selected as Game of the Year on the Mac App Store, where Aurora HDR 2018 won in the app category.
Meanwhile, Super Mario Run was the top free iPhone game of 2017, followed by 8 Ball Pool, Snake VS Block, Ballz, Word Cookies!, Subway Surfers, Episode ft.
While Snapchat was the most downloaded app of 2016, it slipped to the number two position this year, with Snap-owned Bitmoji taking top honors.
Apple has also released the usual top charts listings for free and paid apps and games. This features the most interesting and important apps, games and trends in app culture.
For Apple Music, the most popular album was Drake's More Life and Ed Sheeran snagged the most popular song with Shape of You.
A Star Wars Story and Wonder Woman were 2017's top three films in both iTunes and the Play Store.
Drama is the genre dominating the iTunes TV charts this year, with favourites like "Game of Thrones" and "The Walking Dead" topping the year.
On iPad, the most popular free download was the official YouTube app.
