Young one of four Reds in England squad

Gareth Southgate says he has omitted Chris Smalling from his England squad to face Germany and Brazil because he does not believe the Manchester United centre back can play in a back three.

"I have huge respect for Chris, " Southgate said.

England announced the squad on their official Twitter account on Thursday afternoon, selecting four uncapped players in Joe Gomez, Tammy Abraham, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Jordan Pickford.

"These lads are players who, right through the age groups, have been recognised as being our best players and they're all playing well with their clubs and having a good impact".

"This is an opportunity to look at new players and a different way of playing and I think the beauty of my position is that I know the young players in the system".

England boss Gareth Southgate has revealed that he has been left impressed by the recent performances of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks.

"He's a player every Manchester United manager has picked, and that tells me something about his mentality and the trust they have in him". A back-three is ideal for him, he's quick, athletic and can use the ball.

Ashley Young has been called up to the England squad for the friendly matches against Germany and Brazil in November.

Meanwhile, United youngsters Dean Henderson and Axel Tuanzebe have been named in the England Under-21s squad for their European Championship qualifier at Ukraine on Friday 10 November.
