Two militants and an army man were killed in an encounter between militants and security forces in south Kashmir's Kulgam district on Tuesday.
Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Nowbug Kund village in Qazigund area of Kulgam this morning after receiving specific information about the presence of militants in the area, a police spokesman said. The militants fired upon search party when it approached towards a house triggering encounter. One terrorist has been killed in the operation. In a second encounter on Tuesday, security forces launched a search operation in the forests of Laam-Tral area in south Kashmir's Pulwama district, after detecting suspicious militant movement in the region.
Later, an intense gunfight broke out after militants hiding in the area started firing at the armed forces. "The militants were asked to surrender, but they fired from automatic weapons".
The injured soldier and policeman were shifted to a hospital.
A hideout of Jaish-e-Muhammad militant outfit was busted in the operation, said the official.
The slain militant was identified as Mudasir Badroo, a resident of Yaripora in Kulgam.
Officials said the militants could be foreigners. Though some reports said Mudasir was a B Tech graduate, Pani ruled out this.
Authorities snapped internet services in Kulgam and adjoining Anantnag district after the incident.
There have been three gun-battles between armed forces and the militants in Kashmir in the last 12 hours. According to a police spokesperson, "The operation turned into an encounter".
