FIFA RANKINGS: Super Eagles tumble to 50th despite big win over Argentina

The next ranking will be released on December 21.

Wales, who Martin O'Neill's team beat to a World Cup playoff spot, drop five places to 19th.

Ireland's 5-1 humiliation at the hands of Christian Eriksen and his mates last week has seen the team fall six places in FIFA's world rankings.

.

Despite qualifying for next year's World Cup undefeated, England have dropped three spots to a 17-year low of 15th.

Instead, the country tumbled down the rankings, and Super Eagles fans have been so riled by the news that they took time out to rail against the seeming injustice.

The Super Eagles will be participating in their fifth FIFA World Cup competition.

This last sentiment was one of the more rational of the responses, and one that demands some explanation. Both Colombia and Serbia had higher rankings than South Korea. However, Nigeria are eighth in Africa.

If Fifa went on rankings then Chile would get the nod, now ranked 10th in the latest World rankings.

However, the Eagles are better ranked than World Cup hosts Russian Federation (65th) as well as fellow World Cup qualifiers Saudi Arabia (63rd) and Panama (56th).

Trying to make sense of the FIFA World Rankings is very much like trying to plait smoke, but nevertheless the system persists.

Having leaped from 44th to 41st spot in the rankings last month, a similar or greater leap was expected for the Nigerian team as they recently drew 1-1 at Algeria in a World Cup qualifier and defeated two-time World Cup winners, Argentina 4-2 in an global friendly.
