Duterte sings at ASEAN gala dinner 'upon Trump's orders'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnbull on the sidelines of ASEAN Summit in Philippines' Manila on Tuesday. "Human rights briefly came up in the context of the Philippines' fight against illegal drugs", Sanders said.

The Philippines is the final leg of Trump's five-country Asia trip where he will meet Southeast Asian leaders as well as policymakers from East Asia Summit countries, like China, Japan, South Korea and Australia, in a two-day meeting.

He told reporters on Air Force One that he had delivered his prepared remarks during the lunch instead of the summit meeting.

"Whoa, whoa", Duterte said, according to a report from the White House press pool.

Duterte has been a controversial figure since taking office as president a year ago, and launching a war on drugs that has killed at least 3,900 people in the Philippines.

However, Trudeau said that during his conversation with Duterte, he "mentioned human rights, rule of law and specifically extra-judicial killings as being an issue that Canada is concerned with". His government says the police act in self-defense, but critics say executions are taking place with no accountability. But Trump's rapport with Duterte comes during a time when Duterte is being criticized around the world for approving extrajudicial killings in his war on drugs.

On the ground, military operations continue to clear buildings for stragglers.

President Rodrigo Duterte did not attend a meeting between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the United Nations due to a conflict of schedule, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday. "Both the leaders said scourge of terrorism has to be dealt with effectively".
