An engineering student was burnt alive at her house in Chennai allegedly by her former classmate and a jilted lover, who had been stalking her for about a month.
The woman's mother and younger sister suffered burn injuries when they tried to save her.
Furious after his proposal getting rejected, the accused started stalking her because of which she had even stopped going to her office.
Police said they detained the suspect, 23-year-old Akash, who was pursuing Induja against her wishes for almost a month.
Her mother suffered 49 percent burns, while the sister is undergoing treatment at Kilpauk Medical Hospital. He was reportedly picked up by police on Tuesday.
A stalker on Monday night killed a girl, whom he obsessed, by setting her on fire and severely injured her mother and sister.
She was being pursued by Akash against her will.
Aakash claimed that he and the woman were in a relationship and they planned to marry, police officials said. Enraged, Aakash allegedly doused her in kerosene, set her on fire and fled from the spot, police said.
On hearing their screams, the neighbours rushed to the victim's house.
Media reports cited neighbours claiming that the ambulance arrived too late, at least 40 minutes after a call was made.
Induja's father is working in Canada. As per the witnesses present at the spot, the hospital ambulance took nearly 40 minutes to reach the residence after receiving a call from a neighbour.
