Amazon launches in Australia this week

"Once you have passed Seller Identity Verification you will be part of this testing phase and you should be prepared to receive orders from this point onward ..."

Since then, however, it has remained tight-lipped on exactly when it would begin trading. They are expected to spend $500 million on Black Friday and Cyber Monday according to Cashrewards, Australia's biggest online retail community.

The email ended by saying "Let's make history!"

Last week at Amazon's seller summit held in Sydney, Amazon Australia's country manager Rocco Braeuniger said the company would be launching its retail offer and its third-party marketplace at the same time.

It's not yet clear how many Aussie customers will be included in the test group or how they will be selected. It reveals that Amazon Marketplace users will need to have their pricing, stock and details up to date to participate and will begin receiving orders from this date.

A Thursday trial and Friday launch would coincide with Black Friday, an annual post-Thanksgiving online sales event in the US.

Amazon will stock its own labels plus private label brands, with products initially expected to be shipped out of a warehouse in Melbourne. That day now appears to almost be upon us.

Australia has always been home to Amazon-registered sellers, but until now they had been limited to sending goods offshore since the $550-billion company did not have any warehouse in the country of 24 million people.

So, same day delivery might not be on the cards for the company right now. Amazon Prime promises buyers ultra-quick, free delivery of purchases along with other benefits.

'Amazon is definitely going to make a dent with the novelty and the buzz factor in the lead-up to Christmas, ' Mr Kilmartin said. "It's a new way of buying, and it will be interesting to see how Joe Punter reacts", said Kilmartin. Year to date, the stock is up nearly 52%, while in the last one month, it is up nearly 16%.
