Superstar Winx clinches third straight Cox Plate title

Off at 1-9 in the United States wagering pool, Winx became the all-time Australian leader in Group 1 wins and money earned while joining Kingston Town as the Group 1 Cox plate's only three-time victor.

Winx, trained in Sydney by expatriate New Zealander Chris Waller, took her earnings to A$15.58 million (US$11.97 million), surpassing triple Melbourne Cup victor Makybe Diva's previous Australasian record of A$14.5 million.

Trainer Chris Waller said: "It was close, as you would expect in a Cox Plate".

Humidor finished fifth contrary to his normal racing pattern.

"I'm lost for words, she's just made history", Bowman said.

She got up for last-gasp victories after breaking slow in her first two outings of the season, the G2 Warwick S. and G2 Chelmsford S., but the result of her final Cox Plate prep, the G1 Turnbull S., was never in doubt as she sailed home by 6 1/2 lengths at Flemington on October 7.

Her turn at the Cox Plate makes her just the second horse to achieve a triple back-to-back title, after Kingston Rule did so in 1980, 1981 and 1982. And you know trying to compare one horse to another, they are always different animals at the end of the day, be but we are in the presence of greatness as you said.

"It was a great run today, but I'd rather we'd won".

"Mark said he didn't feel great coming back so we'll have a look at him in the morning", Weir said. "Winx delivered me my first major Group 1 race three years ago and she's now delivered me my only other two".

"Trying to compare one horse to another is hard, they're all different, but we are in the presence of greatness".

It follows a sensational year from the Chris Waller-trained horse that saw her take out the Turnbull Stakes in Flemington by six-and-a-half lengths.

And she didn't disappoint, out-classing all opposition in the race.

"She's something else, isn't she", Connett said.

Waller had said that there was "a bit of confidence" going into the race, with Winx rated a $1.15 chance to defeat the other eight in the field.
