The bundle is available for undergrads starting today, and current students taking advantage of the Spotify Premium for students service can upgrade for free.
Thanks to a new partnership with Hulu, existing and new subscribers on both Hulu and Spotify can stream music, TV shows, and movies for $4.99 a month with all the benefits of the Hulu Limited Commercials (access to exclusive full series and originals) and Spotify Premium plans, according to a statement. Customers can subscribe through Spotify or Hulu for the offer.
Spotify is hoping a free Hulu subscription will be enough to tip the scales against Apple Music for any incoming freshman looking to become a first-time subscriber. Existing Premium for Student members should go to their accounts to switch plans.
Spotify Premium lets you use the service on all your devices without ads and supports offline caching, playlists and a lot of other stuff. Plus, there is always the chance that students don't cancel or forget to cancel their subscription after graduation resulting in a nice payday for both companies. The type of Hulu service that is included in the promo is the Hulu Limited Commercials plan.
Once a customer's undergraduate status is verified, they will have access to the bundle rate for 12 months, at which point they will need to once again prove that they are students to re-up. Spotify Premium is even higher, priced at $9.99 per month. "By bundling our enormous catalogues of content together in a single, highly compelling offer, we're making it easier for people to enjoy all of the TV and music they love, whenever and wherever they want".
Mark Mulligan, managing director of MIDiA Research, a media and technology research company, said in a blog post Thursday the partnership gives Spotify "a smart way to get into the video market without getting in over its head".
