Rice University in Houston is by far the best college in Texas - and the 14th-best school in the nation - according to U.S. News and World Reports' latest college rankings. Western is also listed 61st of 122 public and private colleges and universities on the top Midwestern list of "Best Regional Universities".

The University of Chicago has held onto its No. 3 spot in U.S. News and World Report rankings of national universities, as Northwestern University moved up the list and the University of IL at Champaign-Urbana fell.

UW-Madison is ranked once again among the best public colleges or universities in the country, but the school dropped out of the top ten. The north region includes Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. Then, colleges are ranked against the other schools in the same category. They provide a starting point for prospective students and their parents to begin comparing schools' characteristics and quality. UMPI came in at #3, its highest showing on this list to date.

According to its website, the U.S. News ranking system "uses exclusively statistical quantitative and qualitative measures that education experts have proposed as reliable indicators of academic quality, and it is based on U.S. News' researched view of what matters in education".

The rankings, released today, are based on assessments of more than 1,600 of the country's four-year colleges and universities and will be included in the 2018 edition of America's Best Colleges. JHU ranks 11th overall and is also recognized by the publication as a best value for students, for its stellar reputation among high school guidance counselors, for its ethnic and economic diversity, and as a top engineering school.

"UB continues to invest in undergraduate education and student services - from our new undergraduate curriculum to our state-of-the-art Silverman Library - which have significantly enhanced the academic experience at UB", said Charles F. Zukoski, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs.

In other highlights from the rankings, CU Boulder's undergraduate business program at the Leeds School of Business landed the No. 20 spot among public universities, or 31st overall. Of those, the ones considered for a National University must have a Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
