"Echo Spot combines the popular small design of Echo Dot, the display of Echo Show, and the features you love about Alexa into an all-new, stylish and compact device", said Tom Taylor, Senior Vice President, Amazon Alexa. Prior to the launch of the Echo Show, Google was reportedly aiming for a release date of mid-2018, but now, it is planning to get the Google Manhattan out before the end of this year.
It'll be interested to see whether this new smart hub screen device makes an appearance at the Google event scheduled for next week in NY. The Google Home Mini and Max are also candidates for an appearance.
The report emerges just a day after Amazon unveiled a slew of new Echo devices, all enabled to run Alexa, the internet retailer's voice assistant.
After Amazon's event earlier this week there will shortly be a formidable amount different versions Amazon Echoes on the market.
We're going to need a lot of salt for this one. It's created to automatically look for compatible smart home devices with the user command, "Alexa, discover my devices"; and compatible GE, Kwikset, and Philips Hue devices will then be connected to the Echo Plus.
Now one of the advantages that Alexa has over the Google Assistant, is the fact that there is a whole section on Amazon's website for products that work with Alexa.
Having their own smart hub screen is a logical move for Google, especially given their recent move to remove YouTube from the Echo Show due to Amazon's violations of their terms of services when it comes to subscriptions and video recommendations. An Amazon statement following the service interruption said that "Google has chosen to no longer make YouTube available on Echo Show, without explanation and without notification to customers".
The problem with the Echo Show is that it was unable to show users their subscriptions or recommendations, two key features on YouTube that Google needs to ensure growth and user engagement.
Amazon also introduced Echo Connect, which is a $35 box that will allow you to place phone calls to landlines using your existing Amazon Echo units. "There is no technical reason for that decision", The Verge quoted Amazon as saying.
