Malaysia tops SEA Games with 145 gold

Host country Malaysia walked away with 145 gold medals.

National divers signed off with the men's and women's titles in the synchronised 10m platform to sweep all 13 golds offered in the sport at the National Aquatic Centre. If Indonesian athletes were to win all of the remaining gold medals up for grabs, the gold medal tally would only go up to 45.

"On behalf of the state government, I would like to congratulate the Malaysian contingent for their gold medal achievements beyond everyone's expectation", he said, adding that the state government is equally as proud of all athletes who won the silver and bronze medals as well.

"We still have a year for the athletes to train for the Asian Games", Kalla said.

Malaysian bet Anja Chong won the gold with a time of 1:48.835, while Singapore's Cheyenne Goh snatched the silver at 1:48.907.

"I am happy that we finished in second place even though I wanted them to finish first", he said.

Host country Malaysia has already locked up the overall victor position, having earned 141 gold medals.

"We hope their results at the 29th SEA Games will be an indication of bigger things to come".

The 29th SEA Games took place in Malaysia from August 19-30 with the participation of 4,888 athletes from 10 member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Timor-Leste.

He also claimed officials from other countries shared his views.

"All of us, including the critics, should rally behind the 2019 Philippine hosting and support the athletes in any way we can", said Cojuangco, who bickered with chief of mission Cynthia Carrion after the POC disapproved her prepared program for the closing ceremonies.

The inclusion of traditional sports in the SEA Games, said the newspaper, would have been used as an excuse by Thailand if it lost its regional domination to Malaysia, but was an argument it could not keep using anymore.
