President Trump on Monday approved a Louisiana emergency declaration as Tropical Storm Harvey continued to pour rain onto the the devastated region.
Mr. Edwards also said his state has dispatched personnel to Texas to assist with recovery efforts there. This action will help alleviate the hardship and suffering that the emergency has inflicted on the local population, and provide appropriate assistance for required emergency measures, authorized under Title V of the Stafford Act, to save lives and to protect property and public health and safety, and to lessen or avert the threat of a catastrophe in the parishes of Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, Jefferson Davis, and Vermillion. As a result of the severity of the storm, which has pounded some parts of Texas with up to 50 inches of rain and resulted in extensive flooding, William "Brock" Long, the director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has reported that, sadly, a full recovery from the storm could take a very long time.
He said he believes the federal government should have a limited role, "but among those limited roles is a disaster exactly like this".
Edwards said the state is taking the necessary steps to provide immediate assistance to residents now affected, but that Louisiana will still need additional support from the federal government.
He issued a statewide emergency declaration on Thursday and "directed the execution of the State Emergency Operations Plan".
Louisiana lawmakers, including Gov. John Bel Edwards, teamed up to successfully push for more federal aid to help with recovery efforts from last year's devastating floods. "I will count on my colleagues, Republicans and Democrats, and goodwill to not to this to Texas because this is a storm, a hurricane, an ocean of water that no one has ever seen before".
"Nearly 12 years ago, Texans opened their doors to the people of Louisiana when Hurricane Katrina devastated our state".
"In 2016, Texas Taskforce 1 was dispatched to our state to provide support during the historic floods".
"We'll make sure that the folks in southwest Louisiana have the resources they need to rebuild and recover, " he said.
