Chelsea grew in to the match and ended the first half on top, Pedro stinging the hands of Blues goalkeeper Petr Cech with a powerful effort from a tight angle. It seemed the Brazilian kicked his own leg which caused him to lose his balance. The Gunners could have been punished even further when the defence failed to pick up Cesc Fabregas.
The first-half had seen Willian booked for diving in the penalty area despite there appearing to be contact with the knee of Hector Bellerin, while Pedro received a straight red card late in the second half after catching the heel of Mohamed Elneny with his studs.
Five other Nigerian players, past and present, who have won the FA Community Shield include Daniel Amokachi in 1995 with Everton, Nwankwo Kanu with Arsenal in 1999 and Celestine Babayaro who won it in 2000 with Chelsea. Kolasinac met Xhaka's free-kick delivery easily to equalise for the Gunners and became the first player to score his first Arsenal goal in the Community Shield since Gilberto Silva in 2002.
The last time these two sides were in the Community Shield was in 2015 - Arsenal winning 1-0 thanks to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's strike. After this each team takes two in a row until there is a victor.
Arsenal kick-off the Premier League season at home to Leicester on Friday, before Chelsea travel to Burnley a day later.
Talking to Fox Sports at the end of the game, Conte could not hide his frustration for the defeat but explained Chelsea fans the decision to make Thibaut Cortois kick one of the penalties.
"We put ourselves in a hard position just after half-time, but in the end we produced a performance that we did at the end of last season", the Frenchman said.
