Gunfire broke out at 2:50 p.m. ET inside the Bronx Lebanon Hospital, according to the NYPD.
Police believe the shooter is a former employee of the hospital, Roy reports.
Three doctors were among the injured, the New York Times reported, citing a NY Fire Department official. There was no word on their conditions.
There are five other victims in the Bronx Lebanon Hospital shooting, in addition to the shooting suspect and the woman found dead near him. It took police some time to secure the area, preventing emergency medical workers from immediately entering, the Times said.
According to the Associated Press, at least one person has died.
CBS New York reporter Reena Roy tweeted that the NYPD has confirmed that the shooter is down and no longer a threat.
"Everything is on lockdown", a hospital spokeswoman told BuzzFeed News.
A spokesman for Mayor Bill de Blasio said he has been briefed on the situation.
Police went floor by floor searching for the shooter while the hospital has been surrounded by emergency response vehicles.
