Manchester City signs left-back Benjamin Mendy from Monaco

Although it might well be that United have more business to conclude in the market before the close of the transfer window, the figures still make for interesting reading.

Benjamin Mendy became the highest paid defender in the world, after today's deal between his former and current club.

Benjamin Mendy and Danilo are not expected to feature against Real, with Guardiola once again emphasising the physical nature of these friendlies.

Along with Silva and Mendy joining City, Monaco have also been hit by the departure of midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko to Chelsea, while winger Thomas Lemar is reported to be the subject of interest from Arsenal.

Imagine just how different Mendy's career may have been had he moved to the Wearside club four years ago.

"There were heated discussions, searches on the computer, revising techniques, detailed analyses and enactments of positional play which, at one point, included Trueba (Guardiola's friend) man-marking a chair", reads Guillem Balague's 2012 Pep Guardiola biography "Another way of winning".

Then in 2016 he moved to Monaco for 11 million pounds.

City's director of football was delighted after the contract has been signed.

City have twice gone to Monaco to bolster their squad this summer having signed Bernardo Silva from the Ligue 1 champions in June. For such a young player, he has a wealth of top-level experience.

Mendy quickly managed to establish himself as one of the best full-backs in world football with his powerful and direct style of play. We are all delighted to have him here at Manchester City."I'm sure he will prove a fantastic addition to the squad".

City's central defenders brought their own sort of entertainment last season.

"As soon as the season was over I talked to my family and it was all clear in my mind - I wanted to join Manchester City".

Real Madrid are still without Cristiano Ronaldo who was granted extended time off after the Confederations Cup, but Gareth Bale should start for Los Blancos who were beaten on penalties by Manchester United in a friendly on Sunday.
