Lonzo Ball Agrees With Dad LaVar's Assessment Of His Bad Lakers Debut

Ohm Youngmisuk has covered the Giants, Jets and the National Football League since 2006.

Lonzo Ball wasn't a big baller in his Los Angeles Lakers debut Friday night, but like his outspoken father, he's looking toward better times.

A Lakers public relations representative, sensing this reluctance, ushered him to the center, but Ball had already spent much of Friday handling the limelight on the NBA Summer League stage.

Lonzo was strongest passing the basketball (he had five dimes), as expected, and particularly in the first half. He needs to get better.

"'As far as training my boy, this is as far as I can take him, '" LaVar said he told Johnson.

"He said, 'Earvin, look, I'm not following my son". But he took them. "But I ain't talking about no one else's kids". Ball was 1 for 11 from 3-point range, including a bad miss from well beyond the line - the kind of daring pull-up the Ball family is known for - with 1:16 to play in regulation. "Why wouldn't it be, man?"

"The Lakers are determined to do one-year contracts in free agency, preserving salary-cap space for 2018 to pursue possible free agents Paul George, LeBron James and Russell Westbrook. The proof is in the pudding". "He won't be discouraged. That's what I like about this right here". But he took them. He's supposed to make those shots but he didn't.

"You got a good young core [of players], who all are great". He had a chance to win the game for the Lakers but couldn't connect on a buzzer beater.

The Lakers play the Boston Celtics at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Thomas & Mack.

The bigger question will come with his brand.

"Let her go with Nike and see where she gets", LaVar responded. "We're not going to use that as an excuse".

Overall, Lonzo's defense was adequate, also considering his rebounding effort (he picked up three defensive boards). Before I met him I had already thought that. He's 19 years old. But when going left or at a standstill off the dribble, Ball will probably be fine.

Ball had seemed like the obvious choice for months - a flashy, pass-first point guard who grew up in Chino Hills, California, and starred at UCLA.

The Lakers are in desperate need of offensive help as they finished with the second worst record in the Western Conference after winning just 26 games last season.

LaVar swears his son wasn't nervous in his debut. "He always talks. He's going to set you up. 0-for-whatever doesn't mean nothing". He flashed the vision that made him the second pick in the 2017 draft tallying five assists and three secondary assists.

The venue's capacity is around 15,000, with Cox holding another 2,500. But the majority of the seats are not assigned and will be first come, first serve.

"He has not played a lot of full-court basketball since that last NCAA game", Buechler said of the Bruins' loss to Kentucky in March. It ain't about him being a superstar, but he changed the culture.
