India declare to set Sri Lanka 550 target

A enormous victory target of 550 was out of question for the hosts but they fizzled out in the final session of the fourth day to finish on 245 in 76.5 overs - their innings terminated with injured skipper Rangana Herath and Asela Gunaratne ruled out.

4 - The win (304 runs) is India's fourth biggest margin in terms of runs in Tests. He was playing on 67 when the ball delivered by Ashwin kissed his bat and landed safely in Wriddhiman's gloves. "But this time it was a clinical performance two years down the line", Kohli said at the presentation ceremony. It was also his 10th century as captain and thus overtook former skipper Mohammed Azharuddin in the list of most tons as India captain. Kohli had decided against enforcing the follow-on although the Lankans were trailing by 309 runs when their first innings came to an end.

Ashwin struck again with the key wicket of the left-handed opener, who dragged a bottom-edge onto his stumps when he was in sight of a sixth Test hundred. Seems like it won't be long before Kohli breaks that record too.

His replacement Gunathilaka fared no better as Umesh Yadav (1-42) removed him three overs later for just two runs, Sri Lanka perilously poised at 29-2.

Abhinav is not particularly partial to spinners or fast bowlers, which is unusual but not rare for an opening batsman, but it was clear that this innings was not going to be one where he poked and prodded nervously, batting for survival or even his place in the team. Shikhar (Dhawan) was supposed to go to Melbourne, now he has got a 190 in Galle.

Sri Lankan stand-in skipper Rangana Herath credited India for the win, saying they were outclassed in all three departments of the game. He hit eight boundaries in a second test half-century.

It's Kohli's first three-figure score in Tests since a double-century against Bangladesh in February and comes after he averaged just 9.20 in the Border-Gavaskar series against Australia earlier this year. With that knock, Dhawan has given a selection headache to Kohli as who will partner Rahul once Murali Vijay is fit. "If the pain is there they'll do an MRI scan but at this stage we're just icing it and tomorrow morning we'll know more".

"I really enjoyed batting over here. As I mentioned we always look for things that we can still improve on, but very happy with the first game". In the first session of the match itself the game started slipping away from us.
