Also, an immigration official said the woman, who is from Mexico, entered the US illegally.

Isabel Martinez, 33, appeared before Gwinnett County Magistrate Court Judge Michael Thorpe a day after police said she stabbed the five to death and seriously injured another child at her home outside Atlanta.

A smiling Isabel Martinez was told by a Gwinnett County judge to stop "playing to the camera" after WGCL reported that the 31-year-old knelt in front of the lenses and was warned to sit back in the bench.

She was charged with six counts of felony aggravated assault and ten counts of murder. "It's really not a good idea, probably not to your benefit". "Nothing else matters, I am representing the people that are humble, hardworking, the people who suffer and those who have a lot of charges so they understand everything is possible with God".

"My attorneys are always going to be the people and my faith".

"You are the hope of the world, each one of you", she said in Spanish, appearing to address the news cameras.

Thorpe advised Martinez to hire a lawyer or to allow one to be appointed for her.

She's also being held for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The judge said he couldn't force her to accept counsel, but he recommended that she do so. Police called the scene "horrendous".

- Family members of the man and four young children who officers found stabbed to death in Gwinnett County Thursday morning are trying to raise money for the sole survivor and to pay for funeral expenses for five other loved ones. This is her first encounter with ICE, authorities said. "I found that was not the case".

A neighbor told 11Alive that the family was often seen together and that Martinez "seemed like a happy person".

Investigators have not determined a motive for the crimes, but said that Martinez has been cooperative.

Police said Martinez called 911 to report the killings from the home the family shared outside Atlanta. Michele Pihera said the caller was speaking Spanish, which initially made it hard for 911 operators to communicate with her.

The children killed were identified as Isabela Martinez, 10; Dacota Romero, 7; Axel Romero, 2; and 4-year-old Dillan Martin-Romero. The relative, identified as Hallie Romero, of Loganville, said Diana is expected to be in the hospital for two to three weeks.
