Mumbai: Star batsman Rohit Sharma and pacer Mohammad Shami were on Sunday re-called to the 16-member Indian Test squad for the Sri Lanka tour scheduled to be held from July 26 to September 6. However, Karun Nair, who scored a triple century against England in December a year ago, and offspinner Jayant Yadav have been axed from the squad. Rohit replaces Karun Nair, while Shami has been chosen ahead of Jayant Yadav. Rohit missed India's last Test series against Australia due to injury but he makes a return into the Test squad after proving his fitness and performing really well in the Champions Trophy 2017 in June.
A number of other Test regulars like Murali Vijay, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Wriddhiman Saha and Ishant Sharma also returned to the side. He underwent surgery after injuring his thigh during the One-Day International series against New Zealand and had not played competitive cricket for four months.
KL Rahul, who had a run of six fifties in seven innings in the Australia series, is also back in the India set-up having recuperated from the injury that ruled him out of the Indian Premier League, the Champions Trophy and the ongoing West Indies series.
The national selection committee has named Karun the captain of the India A "Test" side to South Africa, where he is expected to play both formats.
India's last tour of Sri Lanka was two years ago in August 2015 when they played a Test series which they won 2-1. Kohli's men will be playing three Tests, five ODIs and one T20I during the series.
