Arfield leads the way as Canada wins Cup opener

Mexico and the United States have won 12 of the 13 Gold Cups since 1991.

Considering these are likely the two best teams in the group, both sides should expect better for the rest of this stage.

Group A consists of Honduras, Costa Rica, French Guiana and Canada. Each nation picked up their first point in the tournament's Group B, with group mates Nicaragua and Martinique still to play.

Toyota is a first-time sponsor of the Gold Cup and CONCACAF.

Canada's teenage sensation Alphonso Davies scored a pair of second-half goals in a 4-2 win against French Guiana to kick off the 2017 Gold Cup in Harrison, New Jersey, on Friday night. Because he looks to be a special player and he had a special coming out party in his Gold Cup debut. Both teams are among the top four in the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying standings.

The Reds deserved to be up 3-0 at the hour mark for the way they dictated the proceedings and for all the questions they asked of French Guiana's defence. Star goalkeeper, Keylor Navas, was unsurprisingly left off the roster, but the likes of Bryan Ruiz, Joel Campbell, and Christian Gamboa could make Costa Rica a contender for the cup.

The Sporting Kansas City forward struck in the 50th minute before Panama equalized 10 minutes later through Jose Calderon, splitting the points between the the regional rivals in their Group B opener of the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Dwyer, a native of England who changed his citizenship status ahead of next year's World Cup, scored in his debut with the US national team in a friendly last weekend against Ghana. United States of America are unbeaten in their last six home games with four wins, while Panama have won just once in their last eight travels, suffering five defeats. The hosts are tipped for victory at 15/20. "It's not just the senior team but the whole mindset of how Canada is preparing for big tournaments and where the resources are placed and where the priorities lie". Martinique have not won a game since last October, while Nicaragua have lost five of their last seven matches. A tight affair is expected with the sides tipped to cancel each other out at 2/1.

The two heavyweights of CONCACAF are not fielding full-strength rosters for the Gold Cup, but that does not mean there is anything less at stake for Mexico and the United States. If Portland Timbers striker, Darren Mattocks, can hit top form then Jamaica can make a push for the semifinals, but no further.

Camargo's goal was his second for the national team. His strong MLS season helped him secure a move to the current EPL champions, Chelsea, but he was sent out on loan to Vitesse in the Eredivisie to play the 2016-17 season.

So will be the play of the USA back line, which, like it did against Ghana, must contend with a Panama team that can attack at speed. Back Mexico to win at 1/4.
