After what was reportedly a trying search for who would play the film's lead, Disney has chosen Canadian actor Mena Massed, the current star of the Amazon series "Jack Ryan", as Aladdin. He'll be acting opposite Power Rangers star Naomi Scott who will be taking on the role of Princess Jasmine. All three actors were rumored for their respective roles in recent months, but they've now been officially announced as part of the cast of Ritchie's Disney fairytale adaptation. The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of this station.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, over 2000 actors and actresses read for the roles of Aladdin and Jasmine. Massoud was born in Egypt and raised in Canada while Scott, half-Indian, was raised in the UK. While Scott has some high-profile work to her name such as "Power Rangers", Massoud (pictured below) is more of a newbie.
In the original animated version of Aladdin, which came out in 1992, Genie was famously voiced by the late Robin Williams.
Aladdin is now set to start shooting in August. Jonathan Eirich is executive producing.
