Trump, Modi seek rapport despite friction on trade, immigration

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday invited Ivanka Trump, daughter of US President Donald Trump to India, to lead the US delegation of entrepreneurs.

"For Trump, the personal is political", said Atman Trivedi, an Asia specialist at Hills & Company consultancy.

"I have invited her (Ivanka Trump) to lead the U.S. delegation for global entrepreneurship forum", Modi said while jointly addressing the media with Trump following delegation-level talks between the two sides.

Trump also called for the threat posed by North Korea's nuclear and ballistic programs to be "rapidly" tackled, and thanked Modi for "joining us in applying new sanctions against Pyongyang".

He is a senior leader of the largest rebel group fighting Indian rule in Kashmir, Hizbul Mujahideen.

Modi said there was no reason for the US and India to be rivals, stressing that both he and Trump shared a joint desire to increase productivity, growth and job creation.

US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley -a first-generation immigrant who was born Nimrata Randhawa and is the sole Indian American cabinet member in the Trump administration - is also believed to be playing a prominent role during the Modi visit Trump had invited Haley to the Monday lunch he usually has with US Vice-President Mike Pence, just ahead of Modi's arrival at the White House at 3.30pm, presumably to discuss the upcoming meeting. "India and the United States will always be tied together in friendship and respect", he said.

Modi in turn made Trump beam by hailing his reputation as deal maker from his time as property tycoon.

While Trump champions the idea of "America First" and wants to stop the migration of jobs overseas, Modi has his own drive to boost manufacturing at home, dubbed "Make in India". In advance of the meeting, the Trump administration approved India's purchase of almost two dozen unarmed surveillance drones.
