Thomas shoots 63, but Harman leads after Round 3

After three rounds of golf, it is another lefty that has all the fans buzzing.

But with debut host course Erin Hills yielding to scores not typical of a US Open, Thomas couldn't hold the lead for more than an hour as Harman came in with a five-under-par 67 during the third round. He became the first player to reach 13 under at the U.S. Open in the second round, but double-bogeyed 18 to close at 11 under and with a six-shot lead.

"We're breaking down all kinds of barriers", Harman quipped. I was exhausted today, too. I still feel like I've got some game. So I've got to work on that driver a little bit more and see if I can't hit it a little bit more consistently with some length. That wasn't almost enough to put Stricker into title contention on the longest course in U.S. Open history, especially after the rain-softened greens led to a birdie-fest that pushed the third-round lead to 12-under par, but it did answer any questions about whether his game remains viable in a golfing world obsessed with youth and distance.

His nine-under tour of rain-softened Erin Hills eclipsed the eight-under-par 63 carded by Johnny Miller in winning the 1973 U.S. Open at Oakmont, and matched the all-time low for any major of 63.

After his round, Fowler said he will go back to his rented house he shares with Justin Thomas to talk about Thomas' record-setting 9-under 63 he posted Saturday.

"That means I'm a part of history", Thomas said after the round. I mean, it's all pretty self-explanatory, I guess, in terms of what it means. "I'll just rely on that confidence". "I had no idea about the relation to par, so that was definitely a big bonus". Justin Thomas used his length to go for greens early knowing that more forgiving surfaces will keep the ball from shooting off into the deep fescue. "Oh gosh, Jimmy, be good", he said to caddie Jimmy Johnson when the ball was in the air, and it was close to ideal. He said, yeah, let's do it.

Thomas said he has enjoyed playing at the first-ever US Open in Wisconsin. It's long and a lot of terrain. He ends his weekend at Erin Hills at 1 over.

Thomas became the first man to shoot nine-under score in the history of the US Open.

Harman credits the low scoring on the setup of the golf course. But it's a spread-out course. If I wake up with the same feelings tomorrow I'm going to have a chance.

"But that was cool to see".

The Wisconsin fans have also treated Thomas well. For Reed, they also helped provide confidence in high pressure situations. "Just to hear all the people yelling my name and cheering me on between holes and in between shots is pretty special, so it's a lot of fun". Rickie Fowler is 10-under and Si Woo Kim is nine-under for the tournament.

And yet, Thomas won't even walk to the first tee box Sunday with the lead.

"It's good to get a good round under my belt", Stricker said.

"I don't think I could play any different or score any better than I have done". "But ... it looks like a PGA Tour event course setup". And they mainly tell me, "This is what you're going to wear". "Sounds good, hun." You know, happy wife, happy life", Reed said. "It's huge for me to start the summer this way. The guys who do a really good job of that today are going to have a chance to win".

"It's where we're from". This was the goal going into the week to put ourselves in position to be in contention on Sunday.
