South Sudan no longer in starvation, but situation is critical

Desperate situationSouth Sudan, the world's youngest nation formed after splitting from the north in 2011, has declared famine in parts of Unity State, saying 100,000 people face starvation and another million are on the brink of famine.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report says that 1.7 million people are still facing emergency levels of hunger, one step below starvation.

An estimated 6 million people, half the population, are expected to be severely food insecure this month and next, up from 5.5 million in May, the report said.

"We must not lose sight of the fact that this tragedy is man-made" (.) It is the result of deliberate decisions by the SPLA-in Government, the SPLA-in-Opposition and various other entities, to prosecute and sustain armed conflict to achieve political goals", said Jean-Pierre Lacroix in a briefing on the situation in South Sudan to the UN Security Council.

According to the United Nations agencies and government, about 45,000 people will still be facing humanitarian catastrophe in Leer, Koch, and Mayendit Counties in former Unity State, and Ayod in in former Jonglei State. It is believed that around 45,000 people here are facing famine-like conditions. "An end to this conflict is imperative".

The U.N.'s peacekeeping chief said Wednesday that a unilateral cease-fire declared by the government of South Sudan had not materialized, and that the country remained unstable.

UNICEF said that more than one million children are estimated to be acutely malnourished across South Sudan, including more than 250,000 who are severely malnourished.

She says it will improve access to basic health services, including family planning and reproductive health care for women and girls as well as increasing access to food.

The money will go to help fund two hospitals run by the Combonian missionary sisters, a primary school run by a humanitarian group "Solidarity with South Sudan" and an agricultural project run by the Vatican's Caritas foundation.

Starvation is no longer occurring in Leer and Mayendit Counties, and further deterioration was prevented in Koch and Panyijar Counties of former Unity State as a result of immediate and sustained multi-sector humanitarian assistance delivered to the affected population since March 2017, said Isaiah Chol Aruai, Chairperson of the National Bureau of Statistics. We are in the middle of nowhere, there were already 10,000 people waiting, they were expecting 40,000 people within two or three days coming from very far, walking this distance to get some food to have for a month.

WFP has reached 3.4 million people in South Sudan since the beginning of the year. Together with our partners, we work in 190 countries and territories to translate that commitment into practical action, focusing special effort on reaching the most vulnerable and excluded children, to the benefit of all children, everywhere.
