Scherzer Strikes Out 10, Leads Nationals Over Mets 7-2

Ryon Healy went deep twice for his third multihomer game in two weeks, Matt Joyce also hit a long ball and the Oakland Athletics beat the New York Yankees 5-2 on Saturday.

This home run gave the Mets a 1-1 tie with the Washington Nationals, and it proved to be just the spark the Mets needed offensively.

Gsellman, Matz, and Lugo have just 56 starts under their belt and are now having to take on a lineup that leads the National League in runs.

After a disappointing homestand, the Nationals (42-26) have won three straight to improve to 6-0 in NY, and 24-12 on the road overall, and reverse course.

"I love it. I love competing against the best", Scherzer said.

Justin Turner singled twice, walked twice and extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

The banged-up Mets lost more than a game.

Romero allowed a one-out single to Michael Conforto in the ninth but induced Cespedes to hit into a 5-4-3 double play to post his second save of the season.

The Mets have gotten hurt a lot this season, enough that manager Terry Collins said he wasn't surprised when a trainer told him Lagares had snapped the thumb on his glove hand. "For me, it's all about confidence, he gives you the confidence to run, but that's something I've never really had", Turner said. "We've got veteran leadership in there that won't let down", he added.

After trailing by four twice, NY cut it to 6-4 in the eighth on an RBI single by Jose Reyes. He is 2.16 ERA since he came back on the rotation (four starts).

Jose Abreu had two hits and drove in three runs for the White Sox, who totaled 14 hits. "Sometimes they would show up, sometimes they wouldn't", Strasburg said. Miami's Dan Straily pitched 6 1/3 innings and combined with three relievers on a four-hitter. "Enny, he threw lights out".

The 32-year-old right-hander reached double digits in strikeouts for the fifth straight start and limited the Mets to four hits in eight innings, leading the Nationals over NY 7-2 on Friday night.

That all changed on Sunday when deGrom blasted a 379-foot shot over the left-centerfield wall in the third inning - his first career home run and just the second extra-base hit of his season.

Harper and the Washington Nationals battered NY from the start, romping 8-3 Thursday night and reversing a recent slide by the NL East leaders.

Royals 7, Angels 2 • Lorenzo Cain and Alex Gordon hit solo home runs and Kansas City picked up its fifth consecutive victory, defeating host Los Angeles.

Strasburg couldn't figure out how to get Yoenis Cespedes and Jay Bruce out as they went a combined 6 for 6 against him. In two starts this season, Lugo is 1-1 with a 2.63 ERA.

Right-hander Seth Lugo (1-1) took the loss after giving up four runs (three earned), seven hits and two walks while striking out five in 6 2/3 innings. He was diagnosed with a partially torn ligament late in spring training.

NOTES: The Nationals placed RHP Shawn Kelley (right trapezius strain) on the 10-day disabled list and recalled RHP A.J. Cole from Triple-A Syracuse.

If they do win 3-1 their lead will increase to 10.5 games and probably put them over the top. The slugger has also dealt with quadriceps and heel issues recently, and his legs were tested several times Saturday following hours of heavy rain in the early afternoon before the game. Bryce Harper finished with three hits, including a run-scoring single, as the Nationals improved to 5-0 at Citi Field this year. He's the first Dodgers pitcher to get so deep into a season without a loss since 1985, when Orel Hershiser made his first 11 starts without a loss, according to STATS.

Can Jacob deGrom save the Mets from being swept at home by the Nationals today at 1:10PM ET?
