Scalise remains in critical condition after shooting

Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., remains in critical condition, hospital officials said this afternoon, after the House majority whip and three others were shot at a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia, Wednesday.

Scalise, 51, was in dire condition when he was first shot, but internal bleeding is under control and the prognosis is positive.

According to the doctors, the main concern for Scalise at this point is making sure he does not have an infection.

Numerous players in the congressional game Thursday night are wearing Louisiana State University hats in honor of Scalise, a graduate of the school, as they assemble at Nationals Park in Washington. But Nancy Pelosi, the top Democrat in the House of Representatives, criticized some Republicans who have blamed the shooting on vitriol from the political left. "The round fragmented and did substantial damage to bones, internal organs and blood vessels".

Griner, who was also shot, is in the hospital in good condition and spirits after a gunshot wound to the ankle, Sava said Friday. Also hurt but released from hospitals were two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and House GOP aide Zack Barth.

The bullet entered Scalise's left hip and tore through his pelvis, breaking bones, injuring organs and causing severe bleeding.

"My dear friend Steve Scalise took a bullet for all of us and because of him - and all the tremendous pain and suffering he has endured, he is having a hard time, far worse than anyone thought - our country will perhaps become closer, more unified, so important", Trump said.

Trump's comments came at the beginning of his speech in Miami Friday announcing a partial rollback of ties to Cuba - reversing changes made by President Barack Obama's administration.

Since then, the lawmaker has undergone multiple surgeries and procedures to stop the bleeding and fix bone.

The gunman, James T. Hodgkinson, was killed by police after the Wednesday shooting rampage.

The shooter fired repeatedly with a rifle at the baseball field in Alexandria before being wounded in a gunfight with Capitol Hill police who were at the scene, lawmakers said.

The Capitol Police Memorial Fund was added to the list of charities that will receive money raised by the game in honor of two members of Scalise's security detail who were at the Wednesday practice session and returned fire.

Now, doctors are "encouraged in the improvement in his condition in the last 36 hours", Sava said. He is more responsive, and is speaking with his loved ones.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was wounded along with four others. "I'm prayerful he will pull through, and I hope he does", he said.

The man who opened fire on Republican lawmakers practicing baseball had angrily railed against President Donald Trump the day before the shooting.

Republicans and Democrats are fighting for bragging rights in their annual Congressional Baseball game, and doing so as one unit - Team Scalise.
