Westbrook won the award over Rockets guard James Harden, who had a remarkable season as well.
Last season, Westbrook repeated the achievement Oscar Robertson became the second player in National Basketball Association history, ended the regular season with a triple-double per game (31.6 points and 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists).
"Remember, I was the one who taught you to play basketball", Swift joked in the video. It was obviously an wonderful season for me.
"So this award is not for me. It's for all of us".
An emotional player on the court, Westbrook couldn't fight back the tears as he thanked his family Monday night. "That's why I'm a part of your congratulations video, because we just, we go back 20 years".
It made me think at the time, Westbrook relished the chance to be out from under Durant's shadow.
Earlier in the awards show, Malcolm Brogdon from the Milwaukee Bucks was named the Rookie of the Year.
Teammate Giannis Antetokounmpo won the most improved player award. This is a testament to guys who get overlooked. You guys sacrificed everything. Brogdon beat out Dario Saric and Joel Embiid both players with the Philadelphia 76ers.
"This isn't an individual award", Green said. Every time I come home I just, regardless of a good or bad game, every time I see your face I just smile. "I can't do this myself so I appreciate them".
So here we are, at the end of the year and everything is as we thought it would be. "Great organization", D'Antoni said of the Rockets' 55-win season.
Why did he win?: Have you looked at his stats? He finished second to Leonard in defensive player of the year voting in each of the last two seasons.
"My teammates are there to support me and push me and motivate me", said Nowitzki. "I'm overwhelmed with joy right now". And the most important thing is the 22-year-old did it on a winning team.
Westbrook's victory ended the first NBA Awards show, in NY, which included two wins each for the Houston Rockets and Milwaukee Bucks.
