Yesterday morning, police say, Hodgkinson fired dozens of bullets at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Va., wounding five, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La. The annual GOP-Democrats baseball game raises money for charity.
He was practicing for an annual congressional baseball game, working out with his Republican colleagues in a park across the Potomac River from the U.S. Capitol, when a gunman armed with a semiautomatic rifle opened fire.
Here's the video of the bipartisan moment of silence and prayer for Rep. Steve Scalise and the other victims. After accepting it gracefully, Barton cracked, "Next year we won't be so nice".
The attacker, who had traveled to Washington several months ago from the Midwestern state of IL, was fatally wounded by members of the Capitol Police who were in a security detail protecting Scalise. "ONE FAMILY", proclaimed a sign in the crowd.
The hospital where Scalise is recuperating says he "remains in critical condition, but has improved in the last 24 hours".
"We have exceeded 20,000 in ticket sales", the post said. "The game will go on".
"A lot of times in politics we have divisions but it shouldn't come to violence", he said. But despite the unifying nature of the event, there were boos for the president, too, from the section for Democratic fans on the third base side. Unfortunately, it took a tragedy of Wednesday's magnitude for that to happen. The list included Representatives Mo Brooks and Jeff Duncan, who were at the practice, and Representative Trent Franks, who was not, CBS said.
"That was tough for me", Duncan said.
"As far as winning and losing, I think that's far from anybody's mind right now", Flake said. "Other than that, the state can't take it away". He wore a purple boot.
Both Republican and Democratic leaders at the game encouraged a sense of unity in the wake of the shooting during an otherwise politically rancorous time in Washington when the parties are sharply divided over healthcare legislation and investigations of the members of the Trump administration. "We love you." Lewis led a House floor Democratic sit-in previous year when Republicans refused to consider gun control legislation.
The Democrats won the game, 11-2, but loaned the trophy to the Republicans until Scalise is better. Still, the divide was good-natured, for once. The doctor declined to discuss details of damage to Scalise's internal organs and said the medical team would make no effort to remove "possibly hundreds" of bullet fragments in the lawmaker's abdomen.
For now, Scalise remains in critical condition in the hospital's intensive care unit.
The charities are the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington, Washington Literacy Center, the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation and, after Wednesday's shooting, the Capitol Police Memorial Fund.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said that on Thursday night, everyone will be "Team Scalise".
